Good News Spring 2014

by Shannon McAllister on August 27, 2014

Hello, It seems that Spring has finally come! I hope that all of you, like the children in our Homework Club, took some time recently to reflect on the resurrection of our Savior and the joy that He brings! We truly enjoy finding new ways to share this with those we serve each year.

Since our last newsletter, community meetings were held regarding our walking trail and using volunteers to increase our hours of access for the playground, a new student joined our Homework Club, we began the process of preparing the ground & building a fence for a garden, and we planted our Pinwheel Garden for Child Abuse Prevention month (April), along with many other activities.

Work has begun on the walking trail! I am so excited to see this begin to come together! We have also developed a survey on various side projects for the trail, hoping to make it as fun to use as possible. Please contact us if you would like to complete the survey. Our prayer for this trail is that it will bring more people to The John 3:16 Center, provide us with an opportunity to have informal conversations with parents & families, develop relationships and identify needs. In addition, be on the lookout for environmental education opportunities—the first on the horizon is an opportunity for teens to participate in learning how to lead activities that teach children about their environment (May 10th & 17th, 11am-2pm). Anyone interested must register in advance.

With spring comes our two May fundraisers…golf tournament & yard sale! It is not too late to sign up a team or be a sponsor of some type (donate a door prize or items for golfer goodie bags, sponsor a hole, be a prize sponsor, etc ) for our annual golf tournament, to be held on May 9th at Chockoyotte Country Club. Details are in the newsletter and on the website! Your participation provides funds for our programs serving children & their families. As you begin spring cleaning, consider donating items you no longer use for our upcoming yard sale at Lakeside Lutheran on May 24th.

We are also finalizing plans for our free summer day camp. Once again, we have both educational and Biblical themes for each week of camp. In response to many requests, we are also returning to identifying different weeks for groups of grade levels (1st-3rd & 4th-7th). We will take up to 2 students in grade levels above 7th to be student assistants each week. Registration has begun—if you know of anyone looking for summer activities for their children/grandchildren, send them our way! Children look forward to returning each year and we enjoy developing games, crafts, devotions, and educational enrichment opportunities for them! Please keep us in prayer as we continue to serve and as our strategic planning committee begins to meet. Pray that God will give us wisdom and discernment as we plan for the future direction of C.A.R.E./The John 3:16 Center and the programs through which we work. Thank you all for your continued support, in its various forms; God uses you to accomplish great things in our community! May He bless you as you continue to serve Him!

In Christ,
Shannon McAllister
